Need a good vacuum for hardwood floors?

I have 100% hardwood floors in my 2 story house, plus a few pets, so we have lots of dust to clean up. Can anyone recommend a good vacuum specifically for hardwood floors? I'm thinking maybe a canister vac. Please no Swiffers. I have those, but need a vacuum. Suggestions?
