Dear cat-owning MeFites, please help a new kitten owner: what’s the best way to kitten-proof a stair railing with a dangerous drop-off? We’ve had 4 adult cats in our current house before, and they never had problems with the stairs, but now we’ve got two 8-week-old barn kittens we’ve saved from becoming owl fodder (the probably fate of a sibling or two). But our house has its own dangers of course. Primary one is the stairway going to the second floor. At the top the stairwell is surrounded by open bannisters with gaps that a kitten can easily get through. At the far side that means a straight drop of 8 feet to a hardwood floor, or (worse) to the bottom stair or two. Unless we keep them cooped up in one room forever, they’ll have to deal with this eventually. My provisional idea is to put a couple strips of duct tape with the sticky side facing outward along the rails. Another thought is to get a pattern for an easy beginner project (like a scarf) and give them the pattern along with a skien of yarn to make it and the hook they need. I did this once and included a "coupon" for a free crochet lesson with me and my friend loved it!
There are also many learn to crochet sets that come with a variety of hooks, along with instruction book and some even have DVDs.

If they need sanding, contract it out. The dust is very fine like talcum powder and gets on everything including you and you will breath some in despite using a mask.
If all they need is cleaning and resealing, you can do it yourself. Mop well, let completely dry and then brush on the finish the same way you would brush on paint. Be sure to have the room at around 70 degrees so the flatner in the finish will smooth the finish and not show brush streaks.

That is a very tedious job. You will be sitting there forever with a pry bar though. You can also buy a floor scraper for about $20 at any hardware store. Generally found in the flooring dept.
Take my experience though, all depending on what you re-cover with (ie. tile, carpet, etc) if you are going with tile, you need to have a glue free surface. Plywood is inexpensive and easier to remove that your laminate, Not to mention the time and aggravation you will save.

Not all adventures in the wilderness are planned. Good stuff to know.
That depends on whether you are installing prefinished or unfinished flooring. On prefinished it is not that much more difficult than laminate except you use nails or glue to install it. There are flooring nailers and flooring staplers and you need to know when to use which one. With unfinished it is best to leave that to someone with experiance as the sanding and finishing stages are critical to having a good looking floor. If you are interested in doing quality work, you need to do a lot more research before taking on these floors.

most hardwoods are suitable, ceramic tile, carpet, and some laminates. its always a good idea to check with experts.

hey man gamakatsu makes a treble hook that one of the hooks on the treble is longer than the others for just that reason. i have used these hooks and i have never missed a fish off of them. man i hope this help you out a bit good luck good fishin be safe and remember to share the experience
