Hi, A friend who has pets and kids bought a Eureka boss smart vac ultra 4870 and she loves it. She said it was recommended by consumer reports magazine and rated right up there with higher priced vacuums. It outperformed the Dyson animal. It was priced around 150.00 and really cleans carpets and bare floors with the flick of a switch. Has hepa filtration for allergies, 8 carpet settings, convenient tools and ability to control suction when using tools. Eureka also rated in the top two for the fewest repairs. You can check out consumer reports magazine online or for free at your local library. Hope this helps.

You can find good hardwood floor vacuum cleaner online, try to see at Amazon, or Google it. You can actually read bunch of reviews online that will surely help you decide what product to buy.

What I can recommend you is this amazing cleaning tips & tricks. My good friend recommended this to me a month ago, and it's really helpful.

The best stick vac I've used is the Electrolux ErgoRapido. It handles carpet and bare floor and the vacuum decouples from the stick to become a hand vac if so needed. It's easy to empty and maintain too.

I've had several all the way from the ones that do not use electric to my shark and oreck stick types. It all depends on if your going to use it once in a blue moon (new boyfriend, girlfriend, study group that sits on floor, or OH my gosh the dreaded visit from Parents) yes I have a daughter in college. If you use it pretty much once a day the ones that Wal Mart put on sale for back to school that are in neat colors work fine. If you want a more sophisticated one I love my shark flip. You vacumn with one side and then you flip a switch and you can mop the floor. I've also tried the one from Oreck and it worked fine too. They work with steam and it keeps the allergies down and you feel like the floor is clean not just mopped over with dirty water. Good Luck in school. Another MOM

The short answer is that uprights typically do better on carpets and canisters typically do better on hard floor surfaces, however that line is blurring rather significantly with vacuums of today.

For carpets, you need a machine with a motorized brush roll to clean and rejuvenate carpet fibers. For bare floors you need a non-motorized brush that will gently loosen dirt and debris for the vacuum to pick up, which means a wand with an 8 to 10 inch wide floor brush.

From the information provided in your question, a canister is probably the best way for you to go. This will give you the performance you need on the bare floor with the added tight quarter performance you'll need for cramped bedrooms and getting under beds. The best canister I've used is a Miele. Miele vacuums are very quiet, with excellent filtration and performance.

Oreck has just released their Quest Pro canister that looks to be an impressive performer as well.

Sebo and Riccar I believe also offer canister models.

If you prefer an upright, Dyson and Miele are my top picks. I've owned a Dyson for over 6 years and use it on both bare and carpeted floors. For bare floors I use the hose and wand with a Kirby floor tool which works far better than trying to just use the upright without the brush roll spinning. I've got the DC 07, the DC 33 is very similar to my machine.

I've been at this business for over 40 years, and I can tell you unequivically, there is no ONE vacuum that will do a really good job on both carpet and bare floors. If you plan on being in this home for a number of years and are wanting to invest in a carpet cleaning system, you'd do well to get a good upright for the carpets and an inexpensive straight suction machine for the bare floors. No upright is going to do a really good job on a bare floor. It makes no difference if you can shut off the brushroll, it actually helps to pick up dirt and push it toward the vacuum opening. If it's just setting there, it's nothing more than an impedance to the movement of air and DIRT around it. However, on the carpet, it does a masterful job. The straight suction unit can be small, as long as it has a fairly strong suction motor and floor attachments, as well as a good dusting and upholstery brush.

Bissell Heavy Duty. It has more suction than a Dyson, at half the price too. Works great and has a button to shut off the carpet spinner when moving to hardwoods so it wont scratch it.
