While there are many expensive brands, I found a very nice oak, 3/4 inch thick and baords about 2 1/2 inches wide, that was prefinished at Menard's for $2.50 a squarefoot. We installed them ourselves – VERY EASY – and a year later they still look great and we get compliments all the time.
Your best bet it to shop around at various times a year and find the best deal for you in the style of wood flooring you like best. It does pay off in the long run to shop around during the year as prices fluctuate and discounts help alot when ordering a lot of wood.
But what about The Birch and Davie Lisa. Hot or Not?
I've seen it used a lot for exterior floors on decks and porches. Its a great wood for that. I have never seen it indoors. The only potential problem I can imagine is sanding and finishing. I recommend getting a few pieces and testing different finishes before making your final decision.
